SCRMC aids in vaccinating JCJC faculty and staff | Schools
The following is a press release from Jones County Junior College:
For the first time at Jones County Junior College, faculty and staff were offered more than just a flu vaccination in an effort to prevent illnesses. JCJC Health Services partnered with South Central Regional Medical Center’s Wellness Works to offer, TDAP or Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis, and Hepatitis ‘A’ and ‘B’ immunizations as part of Adult Immunization Awareness Month.
“Adults need to be immunized because we’re seeing a rise of whooping cough or pertussis, which is part of the TDAP shot. We’re also seeing more cases of Hepatitis ‘A’ and ‘B’, which are transmitted through blood and body fluids and can be potentially life threatening. The vaccine is recommended for those with occupational hazards, and those individuals who may be exposed to blood or body fluids in the workplace. Everyone needs a tetanus booster every five to seven years,” said Vicki Hampton, FNP at JCJC’s Health Clinic.
Eighty people took advantage of this first line of defense at JCJC, like LPN instructor Helena Gunnell.
“This is wonderful of the college and SCRMC to offer these services because it is free through our insurance today. If I get injured and need tetanus shot it is a lot more costly in an emergency situation,” said Gunnell.
Assistant Director of Transportation, Wayne Street said, “You never know when you might get injured or come in contact with something because we’re hearing more about Hepatitis so I’m taking precautions and getting all of the vaccinations.”
The Hepatitis A/B vaccine is a series of three shots that will be administered in September, October, and February. The flu shot will be available in October for faculty and staff who sign up for the vaccine. Hampton said the total out-of-pocket cost of all the vaccinations offered through the college clinic and state health insurance cost about $400.
