Jones County investigating case of boy left behind on school bus

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM)- Jones County School officials say they are still investigating the circumstances surrounding a 6-year-old East Elementary student was left on for more than six hours Tuesday.

Superintendent Tommy Parker and Transportation Director Terry Graham walked the isle of bus 112 to see if it was possible to overlook a child.

Parker said the new bus seats are taller and closer. He said the policy is that anytime a child is left behind on a school bus unattended, the driver will be terminated.

Desiree Roby, a 6th grade student from Christian Home Educators Connection, is Mississippi’s 2013 Spelling Bee Champion.  Desiree spelled the championship word dowager in the 26th round of the Bee and will advance to the 86th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., where she will compete against Spelling Bee Champions from every state in America!

Jones County bus driver suspended after child left on bus

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM)- A Jones County school bus driver has been suspended after a first grader spent most of a school day on the bus without being noticed.

The 6-year-old first grader at East Jones Elementary School apparently boarded the bus at 7:30 a.m. Monday.

After interviewing the parents and the bus driver, Superintendent Tommy Parker says it appears the student crawled under the seats, covered himself with a blanket he brought from home, and went to sleep.

Jones County inmate walks off work detail at JCJC

ELLISVILLE (WDAM)- Jones County authorities need your help finding an adult detention center inmate.

Robert Carlise walked off a work detail at JCJC Monday, according to officials. 

Officials said Carlise was spotted getting into a car, possibly an Impala, around 11 a.m. Carlise has been in jail since September of 2012 for a shoplifting offense.

Bizarre twist in Friday morning death of a pedestrian on I-59

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM)- The pedestrian who was killed when he was hit by an 18-wheeler on I-59 Friday morning had an encounter with Laurel Police Thursday night.

Harold Brightman, 52, of Pearl River, La. told Laurel Police he had broke down on I-59 and while walking to get help he was robbed at gunpoint. According to a spokesperson from the Highway Patrol Brightman was taken back to the police department and questioned. When they were finished Brightman asked for a ride back to his car and he apparently started walking south along the interstate.

Pedestrian killed after being struck on I-59 near Ellisville

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM)- An unidentified man was killed early Friday morning when he was struck by an 18-wheeler while walking along I-59 near Ellisville.

The accident happened around 7 a.m. in the southbound lane near mile marker 84. After hitting the pedestrian the 18-wheeler traveled about another 100-yards down the road before coming to a stop.

Authorities say the pedestrian was not carrying identification.

The 18-wheeler belongs to Frisard's Trucking out of Gramercy La.

The Mississippi Highway patrol is investigating the cause.

Man dies, becomes first Laurel homicide victim in four years

LAUREL, MS (WDAM)- The city of Laurel recorded its first homicide in four years on Wednesday.

Jeremy Coleman, 31, died at a Hattiesburg hospital Wednesday night from gunshot wounds he suffered in a weekend shooting incident.

Coleman was found in the front yard of a residence in the 1000 block of North Second Avenue early Sunday morning. He had been shot multiple times.

Police say they are talking to neighbors and are looking for suspects in the case.
