Laurel's water supply contains dangerous bacteria, boil notice issued

LAUREL, MS (WDAM)- On Thursday, just before 6 p.m., The Mississippi State Department of Health issued a boil water alert for customers who receive drinking water from the City of Laurel water supply.

Water sampling showed the presence of E. coli. bacteria. Laurel contracts its water and sewer system maintenance to a private company named United Water Project; spokesperson with the company Randy Dace said one of the 25 water samples tested positive during its monthly state test.

Two Waynesboro men arrested after shooting at Laurel Wal-Mart

Laurel police arrested two men on Wednesday suspected of shooting another man in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Monday night, officers with the Laurel Police Department responded to a report of a shooting in the parking lot of the Laurel Wal-Mart. Upon arrival, officers located a man lying in the parking lot suffering from two gunshot wounds. The victim was transported by EmServe to South Central Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Laurel Mayor declares May 7 as 'National Teacher Day' for Laurel

Laurel Mayor Melvin Mack recently proclaimed May 7, 2013 they will celebrate National Teacher Day for the City of Laurel. The proclamation reads:

WHEREAS, teachers make public schools great; and

WHEREAS, teachers work to open students' minds to ideas, knowledge and dreams; and

WHEREAS, teachers keep American democracy alive by laying the foundation for good citizenship; and

WHEREAS, teachers fill many roles, as listeners, explorers, role models, motivators and mentors; and

JCJC hosts Top of Class 2013

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM)- More than 100 high school students attended Jones County Junior College on Wednesday for Top of Class 2013.

WDAM along with JCJC took the time out to recognize the valedictorians and salutatorians of 50 different high schools in the Mississippi counties.

Students received certificates and also took part in the WDAM video production of the half-hour show that will air May 30 at 6:30 p.m. and June 7 at 6 p.m.

Wesley Home Care Representatives Discuss Recovering at Home

Wesley Home Care Director Carol Tatum, RN and Wesley Home Care Representative Wanda Murphy, RN, will lead a discussion on recovering from surgery or illness at the Senior Circle Lunch and Learn program on May 17 at 11 a.m. in the Glenn Smith Room at Wesley Medical Center.

The seminar is part of an on-going monthly series, featuring local physicians and community leaders discussing a variety of health and wellness topics. Tatum and Murphy will discuss how to stay healthy, happy and at home after major medical events.

Concerned citizen's tip leads to burglary arrests in Jones County

JONES COUNTY (WDAM)- A passerby witnessed a couple's attempt to steal scrap metal in Jones County and notified the authorities on April 26.

The Jones County Sheriff's Department said Joseph Nathan Brashier and Kimberly Caron allegedly burglarized an unoccupied dwelling in the Shady Grove community. 

Brashier is also being charged with possessing beer in a dry county. Caron is also being charged with possession of paraphernalia. Both remain in jail on a $10,500 bond.
